During a brief period 200 years ago, from late April to early June, New Jersey lost two of its most famous military heroes: one on the sea, Capt. James Lawrence, and one on land, Gen. Zebulon Pike. Pike, the son of a military officer, was born during the Revolutionary War, on Jan. 5, 1779. The place of his birth is noted as “Alamatunk,” a Native American term translating to Lamberton, which is either part of today’s Trenton or in Somerset County.
