Valarie Allman grew up a dancer. On Monday, Aug. 2, she danced with joy at the top of the medals podium in the Tokyo Olympics.

The 26-year-old Allman, a Stanford University graduate whose family owns property in and frequents Barnegat Light throughout the year, captured the women’s discus gold medal with a top mark of 68.98 meters, or 226 feet, 3 inches, on her first throw of the finals during the evening session inside Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium.
