Last fall the national media ran stories of a contractor digging up a piece of a wreck while building a seawall in Brick Township. Hope ran high that the remains were those of the immigrant ship Ayrshire, which ran aground in January 1850. The stories stated this was an important wreck because it saw the first use of a rescue device called the Francis life-car. But the importance of the wreck goes much deeper.
