Long Beach Island’s greatest claim to summer fame, even beyond beaching, fishing, surfing, boating, crabbing, ice creaming, mini-golfing, coffee shop hopping, turbine hating and woozily high weekly rental rates, is its summer breezes. They have been nicknamed the Great Atlantic Air Conditioner.

Over the weekend, the cooling breezes were in full effect, possibly too much so. As the mainland went blowtorch with temps in the upper 90s, Island beaches were 25 to even 30 degrees cooler.
