Get the wheels turning at the Tuckerton Historical Society’s event and open house this month.
On Saturday, Nov. 14, visit the Giffordtown Schoolhouse Museum at 35 Leitz Blvd. in Little Egg Harbor from noon to 2 p.m. to learn a little about Tuckerton’s fascinating history. See exhibits on the Tuckerton Wireless, the railroad and Tucker’s Island; admission is free.
Following the open house at 2 p.m., stick around for a lesson on the history of bicycles and how it pertains to Tuckerton. Charlie O’Toole, a member of the International Wheelman Association, will lead the presentation and have antique machines with him. O’Toole will dive into the history of the Tuckerton Wheelman and the Tuckerton Velodrome, “a curved wooden structure that was a bicycle racetrack,” according to the society.
O’Toole’s great-grandfather was a “flyer,” as the velodrome racers were called. Ever since O’Toole saw the racing bicycles as a kid, he’s been interested in antique bicycles.
Dressed in period-appropriate attire, O’Toole will also be joined by his 12-year-old grandson, who is somewhat of an expert himself; he’ll demonstrate how to ride a big-wheel bicycle.
The presentation may be held outdoors, weather permitting, and the historical society asks for a $5 donation at the door. Register by calling Connie at 606-290-1149.
