Does anyone remember when Airbnb and VRBO were actually worthwhile?

I recognize that worthwhile is relatively subjective, so I’ll have to break that down. But as an owner and a renter of these short-term rental sites, I’ve seen the evolution first hand. And there was a time that they served a function, specifically for the budget traveler or small-time hustler with a bedroom to rent.
