In March 1815, Capt. Charles Stewart of the USS Constitution, who was born in Philadelphia but would live in Bordentown, N.J., for over 50 years, found himself in a dangerous position. The captain, not knowing the War of 1812 was over, had captured two British warships, the HMS Cyane and the HMS Levant, in February. Stewart had put part of the Constitution’s crew on board the two prizes but was now being chased by three powerful British warships.
