For fall aficionados, the skies have been highly accommodating. Where summer is dominated by big, hot Bermuda highs, we’ve lately been hosting cool northern high-pressure systems, a huge one anchoring over the northwest Atlantic, contributing to 10 straight days of northern winds, advancing the autumnal feel.

As is the case with onshore winds of a northern tilt, cloud cover eventually forms, sometimes unloosing misty rains and long-sleevedness. It is not the stuff of “Better in September.”

The ocean breezes have been off-putting to fishermen and post-season beachgoers.
