Little Egg Harbor — Pinelands Regional High School freshman Zinnia Moon, singer, songwriter, ukulele player and pianist, placed second overall in last month’s live grand finale of the Musicash online talent contest. She has won $20,000 and plans to write and record new music in the coming months with co-writers and a producer from Musicash Records.

“My experience was incredible,” Moon said. “I would have never imagined myself playing at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles so early in my career. Walking into such a historical and well-known theater was breathtaking. I found myself in my own dressing room with part of the Musicash team, Oliver Sanchez, Drae, Lysette Franco, Jeraldine and Jeff Marino. They all helped create my magical experience.”

Her journey of many months began by submitting a video of herself performing. She then promoted herself via social media to gain votes. Each of six elimination rounds produced two winners: the person with the most votes, and the “golden coin” winner, chosen by judges and producers. In August, she was notified of her selection as a golden coin winner and was invited out to L.A.

She described the feeling of walking on stage as “empowering.” She played with confidence, and the applause that followed just took her breath away.

“Placing as runner-up took me by surprise, and I was beyond excited,” she said.

Aside from the actual performances, Moon said one of her favorite aspects was the glamour of getting her hair and makeup done.

Through it all, her parents, Denise and Stephen Moon, were “blown away.”

“To have professional judges, who work with major talent, approach us to say how talented Zinnia is, with hopes of working with her – we found ourselves at a loss for words.

“We are so lucky to have two daughters (Zinnia and Sahara) that are incredible musicians, and so thankful, and honestly grateful.”  —V.F.
