Brant Beach — NOTE: DATE CHANGE AUGUST 24

Children ages 7 and older with special needs, limited mobility, illness or underprivileged circumstances are invited to shred the surf with nonprofit Waves of Strength on Saturday, Aug. 24. The organization, with the help of local volunteers, is offering “a safe, fun, encouraging surf lesson and experience specifically designed with the child’s special needs in mind.”

The event begins at 9 a.m. on the 68th Street ocean beach in the Brant Beach section of Long Beach Township, which is handicap accessible, and runs until about 1 p.m.

“Waves of Strength truly believes in the healing power of the ocean, in the concept of ‘surf therapy’ and its positive effects on cognitive and physical development, self-esteem and personal growth, as well as stress relief and socio-emotional well being for our younger generations,” states the group’s website wavesofstrength.org.

Approximately 25 participants are already signed up for the event, and more are welcome to register; to do so, email info@wavesofstrength.org. Deadline for registration is Saturday, Aug. 17.

Volunteer spots on the beach are filled, but the organization is seeking a few more surfers – with at least 10 years’ experience – to work directly with the youngsters in the water.

As the website explains, “We understand the special care, and often times equipment, necessary to provide a safe and positive surf experience for those facing a variety of challenges. Our organization is here for the children and families who do not have the option to experience surfing through a traditional surf school that may not be equipped to accommodate their individual circumstance.

“We believe that regardless of the situation a child may be in, salt water has the power to heal. The sensational wonder of riding a wave and spending a day at the beach, soaking in the sun, has the potential to make the troubles in one’s life seem a little bit easier to tackle.”
