It was a quiet midwinter meeting of Barnegat Light Borough Council  Feb. 13, but talk did start on a summer subject – what activities may be allowed at the new bayside pavilion. Because the borough-owned project was built through an open space land acquisition tax levy, there would be certain restrictions on private business enterprises holding events there for profit, officials said.

An ordinance delineating the permitting procedure for weddings and other uses may be ready for introduction at the March monthly meeting. It would also address requests that the borough has begun to get for popular activities such as yoga classes. The rules had not been drawn up for full discussion yet at the Feb. 13 meeting.

But for sure, the roofed, open-air structure will hold the July and August meetings of borough council (the second Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m., caucus meeting at 4:30 p.m.). Meetings of the taxpayers association have also been discussed.

Also, the borough’s evening band series in the summer will be moved to the pavilion from its past site at the Eighth Street gazebo.

The pavilion is located along Bayview Avenue between West Seventh and West Sixth streets.

A petition was received that asked for additional pickleball recreation. The mayor and council members said the borough had planned to add a second court on West 10th Street anyway. The net has been purchased, and the lines will be painted in time for warmer weather.

Among other discussion, resident Darren Stivale wrote a letter with suggestions of cost-effective new technology in public works vehicles that would be quieter than the current back-up alarms, especially for the loader and flatbeds. Council members agreed to review the material.

Also at the meeting, a proclamation congratulated Thomas A. Brindley for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America.  —M.S.
