The Bird Run

Past midnight now, the daybreak further still:

Not far from here, a causeway to the sea…

Across the lot, whichever way it will,

A solitary bird is running free

 

Indifferent to an empty summer stage,

The upward breezes of the teeming shore:

That starry sky perhaps a kind of cage,

And here, for now at least, an open door

 

As in the morning, when I will abound

And in each lifting wave, recall the flight

That somehow you abandoned, having found

Some reason, like this happy bird, tonight.
