Long Beach Township — Next week, Haven Beach Club is the host site for a unique opportunity open to all swimmers. Starting Tuesday, July 16, and concluding Thursday, July 18, the club will welcome former NCAA champion Austin Surhoff and former Olympian Elvis Burrows for a three-day high performance technique camp presented by Fitter and Faster Swim.

With two sessions each day for 11-and-under and 12-and-over age groups, each session will focus on essential techniques designed for fast racing. Tuesday’s sessions will cover explosive starts and relay exchanges for summer league racing (from the side of the pool), while participants will work on freestyle and backstroke during the Wednesday sessions, before the focus shifts to butterfly and breaststroke for Thursday’s sessions.

The camp is designed for swimmers with at least one year of competitive experience. Swimmers younger than 9 years old are not recommended for these clinics without a coach’s recommendation.

While at the University of Texas, Surhoff won the 200-yard individual medley national title in 2010 after winning the Big 12 titles in the 200 IM and 200-yard backstroke. Surhoff now coaches at the University of Virginia. He comes from a family of elite athletes, including former Major League Baseball catcher B.J. Surhoff.

Burrows, who competed in the 50-meter freestyle for his home nation of the Bahamas during the 2008 Olympics, is a national record-holder in several freestyle and butterfly events. A former University of Kentucky swimmer, Burrows also earned multiple All-American honors for the freestyle and medley relay events at the NCAA Championships.

Swimmers and parents also will be invited to ask Elvis and Austin questions during a Q&A session, as they share valuable insights into training philosophies, diet and nutrition and recovery tactics for swimmers.

With check-in at 2:30 p.m., the 11-and-under sessions runs from 3 to 5 p.m. each day, weather permitting, while the 12-and-over group will check in at 5:30 p.m., followed by the clinic from 6 to 8 p.m. Until July 10, individual daily sessions are $99 per swimmer and $259 per swimmer for all three days. The price increases on July 11.
