Surf City — Sailing against major competition in a national event is good experience, regardless of age. Last week, a small contingent of Surf City Yacht Club youngsters were among the hundreds of sailors competing in the C420 National Championships in Newport, R.I., and while they didn’t finish among the top spots, they fared quite well considering the competition.

Racing as part of the blue fleet, Brielle Willoughby and Josh Zeelander finished 37th overall amid the 158-boat field, scoring a net 98 points through eight races. Willoughby and Zeelander swiped the sixth spot in the first race and three races later took seventh. They also snagged the 12th position in the second race and ended with a 10th-place finish. Unfortunately, 32nd-, 25th- and 23rd-place finishes in the third, sixth and seventh races, respectively, hurt their overall placement.

Meanwhile, Declan and Everett Botwinick managed to net 157 points en route to a 68th overall position in the standings, as they finished as high as 19th in the fourth race, but mainly sailed consistently in the 20th-to-24th range. A 29th-place finish in the sixth race was their lowest placement of the regatta.

Also, Bridget Green and William Cornell ended up 92nd overall, netting 184 points as part of the Under-17 division. Green and Cornell started off great, taking third place in the first race, but their placement dropped quickly following 31st-, 21st- and 33rd-place finishes during the next three races. They topped out at 17th during the next four races, ending in 27th place among Under-17 teams.

Surf City Yacht Club will host the C420 New Jersey State Championships on Monday, Aug. 12. —D.B.
