Surf City Tax Assessor Available to Address Reassessment Questions

Mar 20, 2019

Surf City residents who have questions about their reassessment should contact the borough’s tax assessor, Mayor Francis Hodgson announced at this month’s borough council meeting. The tax assessor’s office hours are from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Wednesday.

The borough was ordered by the county and state officials to conduct a reassessment of property taxes that would be applied to the current tax year. Surf City’s last reassessment was in 2004, Walt Higgins, the borough’s tax assessor, has said.

New property values are based on the estimated market value as of Oct. 1, according to Higgins. That is the statutory date required by law, he said. In order for a reassessment to be considered complete, the state mandates 50 percent of the homes in a given municipality must be inspected, according to Higgins. —G.G.S.
