Support Incumbents

Oct 30, 2019

To the Editor:

I am a lifetime resident of Harvey Cedars (summers only for 20 years) and am proud of the fact that, with such increased density on the Island, we have managed to keep as much open space as we have. We have the best and most spacious public park, developed with Green Acres funds under the leadership of Jonathan Oldham and Judy Gerkens; and under Judy’s leadership, we have an activity committee that fills the park with fun events (like fireworks and concerts) at no tax cost to residents. She also initiated an open space tax that will allow the borough to buy undeveloped lots.

Mayor Oldham has, since he became commissioner 28 years ago, fought vigorously to protect the town from horrors like the 1944 hurricane and 1962 northeaster by fighting with various government agencies for, and getting, beach replenishment. Jon never wavered. When Superstorm Sandy hit in 2012, our property damage was minimal compared to other towns. His perseverance paid off.

In recent years these two public servants have upgraded our water facilities; added BeachWheels and handicapped entrances to the beach and paths inside Sunset Park; and added pre- and post-season lifeguard coverage. And coming soon: a newly paved Boulevard (after the water mains are in) and a pickleball court at the park.

I strongly support these two incumbent candidates, who are eager to continue their service to Harvey Cedars. When you vote on Tuesday, Nov. 5, vote for Gerkens and Oldham.
