Beach Haven — Annually, the U.S. Youth National Championship regatta attracts the top competitive sailors under 20 years old, and this year Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club hosted 83 youth sailors competing across four classes from June 21 through Monday. While none of the sailors were local to Long Beach Island, several of the divisions featured the best among youth sailing and some tight races on Barnegat Bay.

One of the close ones involved Laser sailors Chase Carraway of Carolina Yacht Club, Caleb Yoslov of San Francisco Yacht Club (SFYC) and Marcus Huttunen of Mission Bay Yacht Club, who finished within three points of each other. Ultimately, Carraway won the final four races to snag the top spot with 16 points. Yoslov, who won the second and fifth races, took second with 17, and Huttunen, who grabbed the lead spot in the first, third and fourth races, was third with 19.

In the Laser Radial division, Chapman Petersen of Lauderdale and Lake Geneva yacht clubs used consistency, by finishing no lower than sixth in any of the nine races, to win with 22 points, while Will Foox of SFYC, who had led going into the last day of racing, ended up second with 25 points. Connor Nelson of Davis Island Yacht Club was third with 42.

Meanwhile, Hayden Earl and Tommy Styron of Stage Harbor Yacht Club dominated the 29er class, winning with 15 points by taking the top spot in each of the final seven races. Connor Boland and Garrett Dixon were second with 43 points, while Griffin Gigliotti and Aidan Iaconis took third with 46. In the Nacra 15 division, East Greenwich and Southern yacht club’s Ben Rosenberg and Sidney Charbonnet won the first four races and snatched victory with 16 points, while Jack Sutter and Charlotte Versavel took second with 23 and Jessica Smith and Will Murray grabbed third with 29.

In the I420 class, Outfit Sailing’s Justin and Mitchell Callahan cruised to victory with 11 points, well ahead of Oliver Hurwitz and Ethan Froelick (29) and Will Michels and Louis La Fontisee IV (35).

Of course, with summer just getting into gear, the U.S. Youth Championships was just one of many sailing events on the local calendar for the next few months.

Coming up on Friday, June 28, Surf City Yacht Club will host the annual Junior Commodore’s Regatta, featuring boats in the C420, Laser Radial/4.7, Sunfish and Optimist classes. Several weeks later, from Thursday through Sunday, July 18-21, Brant Beach Yacht Club will host the Laser National Championships. On Saturday and Sunday, July 20-21, SCYC is slated to host the Lightning CAD/MET Championship. Brant Beach Yacht Club also is set to host its annual Optimist Regatta on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 1-2.

For those Optimist sailors who are LBI Yacht Racing Association members, the Green Fleet Regatta series will be held on three Tuesdays – July 23 as well as Aug. 6 and 13. The first of that series will be the “Lighthouse” Regatta at Barnegat Light Yacht Club, while the next in the series will be the “No Fear” Regatta at Surf City Yacht Club, and the final one set to be the “Mighty Duck” Regatta at Spray Beach Yacht Club.

On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10-11, Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club will host its annual Down Bay Regatta for A-Cat, B-Cat, E Scow and Lightning boats. On Monday, Aug. 12, SCYC is scheduled to host the C420 New Jersey State Championship. On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24-25, BBYC is the site for this year’s Mariner National Championship, and wrapping up the sailing season on the Island is USODA Atlantic Coast Championships on Sept. 21-22 at Brant Beach Yacht Club.
