Stafford Board of Education Has Hole to Fill Following Resignation

Stafford Township — Sometimes, pursuing career goals has to take a priority over other things, especially when you’re barely 20 years old and working in law enforcement. Such is the case for Kevin Lyons Jr., who after being elected to the Stafford Township Board of Education last November delivered his resignation prior to the board’s Sept. 19 meeting at the Stafford Township Arts Center.

“We received Kevin’s resignation today,” said Business Administrator and Board Secretary Lourdes LaGuardia following the meeting. “He is pursuing his career goals in law enforcement and is unable to continue with his service on the board.”

Last year, the younger Lyons, whose father, Kevin Sr., occupies a seat on the Southern Regional Board of Education and whose mother, Deborah, remains on the Stafford school board, sought one of the open seats and was elected with 5,576 votes, just behind Tammy Wagner’s 5,618 votes.

“I saw an opening and just thought I’d get involved,” the former Stafford district student and 2017 Southern Regional High School graduate said after he was sworn in on Jan. 3. “I grew up in the district, my parents are involved on school boards, and I thought it would be interesting, so I went for it.”

However, after spending another summer working for the Long Beach Township Police Department, more opportunities arose, his mother said.

“He’s doing what he should be doing at his age,” she said after the meeting. “A career is an important thing, and it’s good that he’s doing what he thinks is best. What he’s doing is time consuming.”

With Lyons’ departure, the board is tasked with appointing a replacement for him during the next 60 days., which will require a legal solicitation for candidates and an interviewing process. Once an individual is appointed, he or she will remain in the seat until the end of 2020, at which time he or she can seek election to the spot for another year, ending on Dec. 31, 2021.
