Stafford Township — No doubt, Ava Kelly has established herself as the Southern Regional gymnastics team’s top performer. The sophomore has reached the NJSIAA Individual Championships two years in a row, after all.

On Nov. 9 at Montgomery High School, Kelly was among the crowd competing in the all-around – the first time during her short career, thus far. And while she didn’t place among the top five, Kelly wasn’t too far off, scoring a 35.45 to cap a solid second season. Shore Conference gymnast Grace Costello of St. John Vianney won the all-around title with a 38.650.

On the vault, Kelly registered a top score of 8.85, to go along with an 8.425 on the uneven bars, a 9.025 on the balance beam and a 9.15 for the floor exercise. Last season, Kelly only qualified for the state final on the floor.

Kelly’s effort in Montgomery followed a fantastic South Jersey sectional performance on Nov. 2, when she placed second all-around behind Shawnee’s Felicia Poblete, scoring a 36.425. There Kelly recorded a score of 9.15 on the floor, a seventh-place 9.2 on the vault, a sixth-place 8.925 on the uneven bars and a seventh-place 9.15 on the balance beam.

Barnegat’s Gabrielle DeLillo qualified for the state championship competition on the beam, but the senior Bengal did not attend, according to coach Jennifer DeLeeuw.  —D.B.
