Surf City — Every fall, many gymnasts in New Jersey make earning a spot in the NJSIAA State Championships one of their goals. Southern Regional’s Ava Kelly and Barnegat’s Gabrielle DeLillo were among them.

The Rams’ sophomore on Nov. 2 placed second all-around behind Shawnee’s Felicia Poblete, scoring a 36.425 to earn a position in the season’s individual finale Nov. 9 at Montgomery High School. Kelly recorded a score of 9.15 during the floor exercise at Seneca High School on Saturday as part of her overall total, placing fifth in the event.

Last season as a freshman, Kelly placed eighth overall with a 34.85 and scored a 9.325 on the floor to tie for third and a spot in the floor exercise finals. Kelly also scored a seventh-place 9.2 on the vault, a sixth-place 8.925 on the uneven bars and a seventh-place 9.15 on the balance beam. The top-five finishers from each section, in each event, compete for the individual event state title, as do the top-five all-around finishers from each section.

As for DeLillo, the Bengals’ senior missed last weekend’s Shore Conference Championships due to pneumonia, but managed to recover well enough to compete in the sectional meet. While her all-around score didn’t land her among the top five, DeLillo’s beam routine garnered a 9.2, tying her for fifth with Washington Township’s Angelina Stanfa.

As a team, Southern Regional placed third overall with a 102.825, behind team champion and Shore Conference Class A South foe Brick Memorial (106.0) and Washington Township (104.175). Seneca finished fourth with a 102.625. Only the top team from each section qualifies for the state team championship meet.

Besides Kelly, the Rams were led by Hailey Klimas with an 8.55 on the vault, 7.45 on the bars, 8.925 on the beam and 9.1 on the floor, as well a bars score of 7.475 by Ali English, who also registered an 8.7 on the floor. Klimas finished with an all-around score of 34.025. —D.B.
