Southern Regional High School Hosts Jazz Festival on March 22

With a genre of music known for its smooth sounds and catchy tunes, it’s easy to enjoy some jazz, and music enthusiasts of all kinds can stop by Southern Regional High School next week for the annual Southern Regional Jazz Festival. The afternoon-evening competition event is scheduled for Friday, March 22, from 3:15 to 10 p.m. in the Joseph P. Echle Performing Arts Center in the school’s 9/10 building. General admission is $10; free for Southern Regional students and staff.

The competition, which features school bands from throughout the state, will have three professional judges – John Linder, Andy Lalasis and Patrick C. Dorian – on hand to provide each band with recorded feedback. Bands will be rated on a Gold/Silver/Bronze system, and awards will be given to strong soloists and sections.

The festival will begin at 3:15 with the Southern Regional Middle School band, followed by Barnegat’s Russell O. Brackman Middle School, Stafford Elementary, Pinelands Regional Junior High School and Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School. An award ceremony for the middle/elementary school bands is slated for 5 p.m.

The Southern Regional High School Jazz Band starts the second session at 5:30 p.m., followed by Mainland Jazz Prep, Pinelands Regional High School, Bridgewater-Raritan’s Tuesday Band, Hamilton West High School, Egg Harbor Township High School, Mainland Jazz Express, Seneca High School, Bridgewater-Raritan’s Monday Band, Jackson Liberty High School and Southern Regional’s Jazz Ensemble. Awards for the high school portion begin at 10 p.m.

Trophy sponsors and boosters are still being accepted for the event. A large trophy is $50; a small one is $30. Boosters are $5 each.
