Surf City — The opening week of the fall sports season was a positive one for Southern Regional squads, but perhaps the most impressive start was the one brought forth by the girls tennis team, as coach Howie Madsen’s crew went 3-for-3 and won all three contests by way of shutout.

After knocking off Pinelands on Sept. 3, followed by another 5-0 win over Jackson Memorial the next day, the Rams finished their opening week with a 5-0 rout of Toms River East. Ella Brown won, 6-1, 6-0, at first singles, while Cristina Ciborowski scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory at second singles and Gabby Bates ended up with a 6-2, 6-0 win at third singles. Sarah Pampalone and Tiffany Ortner cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at first doubles, and Ruthi Gandhi and Erica Scheinberg finished with a 6-0, 6-1 win at second doubles.

Returning a strong core of players from last year’s squad, the Southern field hockey team started its season with a win, scorching Shore Conference Class A South foe Toms River South, 9-0, on Sept. 5. Maitland Demand and Emily Raylman each scored four goals, and Kiera Lyons added another, while Erika Barbera and Kate O’Boyle delivered four and three assists, respectively. The Rams jumped out to a 6-0 lead by halftime and rolled from there, as goaltender Maddy Brown needed just two saves for the shutout.

Meanwhile, the girls soccer team, which also returned a solid core group for this season, got off to a 2-0 start with victories over Manchester and Jackson Liberty. Against the Hawks on Sept. 5, Southern fell behind by a pair of goals in the first half before storming back with five goals in the second half for a 5-2 win. Gianna Simon tallied three goals, while Ashley Altman and Megan Lockwood, who also had two assists, each kicked in one. In their opening 4-0 win over the Lions on Sept. 3, Simon scored twice, while Hailey Hochstrasser and Brooke Kline each delivered a goal, and Lockwood distributed a trio of assists.

The Southern boys soccer team, another squad boasting an experienced core of players back from last year, started its season on the right path, as the Rams scored twice during the second half on Sept. 4 to bounce Manalapan, 2-1. Kevin Kiernan scored both goals, with assists from Jimmy Winn and Kerem Satar.

Also, the Rams’ girls volleyball team, which ended up the NJSIAA Group IV runner-up last season and brought back a bunch of players from that crew, kicked off its season just as expected, cruising past Shore Conference Class A South rival Brick Memorial, 25-16, 25-8, on Sept. 5. Stephanie Soares dished out 17 assists, as Emma Gildea and Gianna Schiattarella each banged down five kills, and Adrianna Conforti and Riley Vaughn each delivered three aces. Rachel Pharo also hammered four kills and Madison Gellis managed five digs.

Barnegat Soccer Teams

Start Season Strong

Getting off to a strong start had to be the first goal of the season for the Barnegat boys soccer team, and the Bengals accomplished that feat, opening on Sept. 4 with a 3-2 victory over Shore Conference Class B South foe Lakewood before following up with a 4-1 win over Keyport the next day. Against the Red Raiders, Alex Zuniga and Connor Costello each tallied a pair of goals, while Ken Franke gave out a pair of assists, as the Bengals scored twice in each half for their second win of the season.

Meanwhile, sophomore Isabel Guiro banged in a pair of goals – one in each half – while freshman Angelica Laudati was huge in goal with 20 saves, as the Barnegat girls soccer squad bounced Mater Dei, 2-1, on Sept. 4 for its first victory of the season.

Pinelands Volleyball Team

Cruises in Opener

Most girls volleyball fans probably are expecting Pinelands to be really good again this season, and the Wildcats started off as expected on Sept. 5, cruising to a 25-8, 25-21 victory over Point Pleasant Beach. Emma Capriglione dropped nine kills and made seven digs, while Ciara Rheiner added seven kills and a pair of aces, Sharon Benson scored four aces and Allison Grotts gave out 10 assists. Adrianna Dancisin registered seven digs and two aces, and Carly Brunke also served a pair of aces.
