Southern Regional 4x400 Relay Leads the Way at Indoor Track Meet of Champions

Feb 27, 2019

With a short crew of local high schoolers competing in the NJSIAA Indoor Track and Field Meet of Champions Feb. 23-24, the opportunities were limited for a possible state champion in any event. Unfortunately, none of them got too close to the top of the standings, but one individual and a relay managed to crack the top 10 in their respective events.

Taking the highest spot amid a loaded field was the Southern Regional girls 4x400-meter relay team of Karagan Bulger, Hailey Hochstrasser, Shannon Flaherty and Caitlin Hambor, as they combined for a time of 4:00.99 to snag seventh place overall, about a half-second behind sixth-place Woodbridge. Individually, Southern’s Liam Anderson finished ninth in the boys’ shot put, finishing with a top distance of 51 feet.

Southern distance runner Jackson Braddock finished 11th in the boys’ 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:21.15, while Rams teammate David Springstead tied for 13th with a height of 6 feet in the high jump, and Pinelands Regional’s Liz Makar took 14th in the girls’ shot put with a top throw of 37 feet, 4¾. inches. Pinelands’ Jonathan Makar finished 16th in the boys’ shot put with a distance of 48 feet, 5 inches, and Southern’s Joe Guglielmo wasn’t far behind in 21st with a top throw of 47 feet, 7½ inches. —D.B.
