Southern Fit Offers Boot Camp Style Exercise Regimen

Stafford Township, NJ — Southern Fit recently opened in Manahawkin at 100 McKinley Ave., Suite 2. Unlike most gyms, where people work out on their own, Southern Fit consists of all classes, which are 50-minute workouts for cardio, strength and core training done in boot camp style, said owner John Avalone.

“Our workouts will constantly change,” he said. “Our goal is to challenge every muscle in your body to become stronger. Our creative workouts are designed to increase your strength and endurance, which is why you will never experience the same workout ever. Our ever-changing interval style workouts are designed to increase your strength and endurance. You will never be bored when working out at Southern Fit ,and you will get results.”

Avalone, 48,  has been a fitness buff for most of his life, playing football at Toms River South High School and Moravian University in Pennsylvania. He is a retired police officer from South Brunswick.

“Being an officer, you want to constantly stay in shape,” he said. “I’ve worked in gyms, but since moving to Manahawkin, I wanted an opportunity to start my own fitness center.”

Built with an indoor turf surface, Southern Fit has row bikes, sleds, kettlebells and 7RX straps.

“They’re vinyl straps with which you can do about 150 exercises,” said Avalone.

Toward the back of the facility, one can see stacks of weight-lifting plates.

“But we don’t have free weights,” he said.“We put the plates on sleds, which are pushed across the turf surface.”

Morning classes are available seven days a week. On weekdays, they are scheduled at 5, 6, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30.  Evening classes at 4:30 and 5:30 are offered Monday through Friday, and 6:30 Monday through Thursday. On Saturday and Sunday, morning classes are available at 7, 8 and 9.

Class participants must be at least 16 years of age.

“Eventually, we’ll be looking to add programs for sports teams and kids,” said Avalone.
