Sophs and Seniors Leading the Way for Rams Baseball

Apr 12, 2019

Keith Cocuzza, head coach of the Southern Regional High School varsity baseball team, is relying on a mixture of youth and experience.

“We have a group of talented sophomores,” he said. “I  have likely four everyday starters that are sophomores as well as one sophomore pitcher who will be used a lot. The  young group will be accompanied by a group of returners that performed very well for us last year. We hope to be competitive in the A South as well as the state level.”

Cocuzza enters his fifth season with a 38-37 career mark. Last year, the Rams went 7- 12 (5-9) in A-South. After four games this year, the Rams are 2-2, with 13-5 and 4-0 wins over Brick Memorial and Central Regional, respectively. They lost to Brick, 6-2, and were defeated by Cedar Creek, 11-4.

The Rams’ senior core includes shortstop/pitcher Cole Markley, outfielder Frankie Pellegrino, first baseman A.J. Mandell and pitcher Mike Schiattarella. Last year, Markley batted .357, scoring 17 runs, stealing 12 bases and batting in five runs. Mandell batted .365 with 19 RBIs. Schiattarella had a 3.80 earned run average over 35 innings and 27 strikeouts.

Markley has committed to play at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, while Schiatarella will be playing for Stockton University.

Cocuzza also will be depending on junior outfielder Aiden Hosszu, who batted .468 with 10 RBIs.

Other returnees include senior catcher/outfielder Danny Rinaldi, junior third baseman Ricky Glascock, sophomore infielder/pitcher Jack Plesniarski, sophomore catcher Mike Gallaro, sophomore outfielders Xavier Hendricks and Kevin Cooney and sophomore pitcher Dustin Howarth.

Upcoming games include Monday, April 15, at 4:15 p.m. at Toms River North and a home game against Jackson Memorial Wednesday, April 17, at 4 p.m.
