Anyone itching to do some spring-time outdoors work can participate in a beach sweep on Saturday, April 13. The cleanup will be held rain or shine.

Volunteers will meet at two locations at 9 a.m.: Wally’s at 712 Long Beach Blvd. in Surf City and the Centre Street beach entrance in Beach Haven. Trash bags and cleaning equipment will be provided. Volunteers are urged to bring work gloves.

Clean Ocean Action, which sponsors the beach sweeps, began the statewide cleanup program in 1985.

“We have had 133,390 volunteers participate,” said Allison Meyerhoff, beach sweeps coordinator. “They removed a total of 6.7 million pieces of trash.”

She said each volunteer is given forms to write down every item collected, which Clean Ocean records as part of an annual report. In 2017, 3,770 volunteers collected 204,943 pieces of debris. Plastic items led the list with 152,328 pieces. Foam plastic numbered at 21,743.

“The 2018 report will be available in two weeks,” said Meyerhoff.

“It’s a good activity to do,” said Beach Haven Mayor Nancy Taggart Davis. “Our beaches look pretty clean, but they’re not regularly cleaned in the offseason like they are during the summer so there’s always the possibility of finding litter.”
