Ship Bottom — Shave the date! On Friday, Nov. 29, from 4 to 9 p.m., the Movember Movement culminates locally with a pop-up barbershop event at The Arlington in Ship Bottom to benefit David’s Dream and Believe Cancer Foundation. Between now and then, become an ambassador to the cause and collect pledges of support while letting your hair grow in preparation for the clippers.

At the national level, the Movember campaign asks guys to grow a “mo” (help a bro), raising awareness for men’s issues such as prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

Locally, DDBCF and Swing Graphics have partnered to raise awareness and provide hope. All proceeds from the event, through the foundation, will help male patients battling a cancer diagnosis.

The idea for Shave the Date originated in 2016 when Chad O’Dell, a friend of Swing Graphics and now a hair artist at The Bearded Lady Barbershop in Linwood, was going to school to become a barber. In its first year, the event was held at East Gallery in Surf City.

“We do a lot of graphic design work for the foundation, and DDBCF was actually one of our first clients when we started this business,” Swing’s co-founder Dawn Simon explained. “We thought this would be a great way to give back and show our gratitude.”

Since then, the event has moved to The Arlington. For walk-ins, it is $25 for a shave and/or a haircut and $35 for both. The barbers donate their time to come and cut.

“The event is amazing because other people come out to watch and support the participants,” Simon said. “Many cheer and take photos, as their friends and family members approach the chair. It is so much fun, and we see it as a unique fundraising idea that gets people involved in a new way.”

It’s not just a men’s event, she added. Past women ambassadors have included Jeannine Errico and Monica Frazer.

Here are the four main ways to get involved.

• Become a Shave the Date Ambassador. Sign up as an individual or join a team. Dedicate the month of November to growing a mustache and/or beard; vow to shave those coveted facial decorations, cut those luscious locks or simply advocate for the cause. Collect pledges.

• Donate. Contribute to the cause with a donation to individuals or teams.

• Share the donation page. Help spread the word about the month-long fundraising commitment.

• Attend the family-friendly Mustache Bash and Pop-Up Barbershop featuring The Bearded Lady on Nov. 29. Get a haircut and a shave, or just enjoy the party.
