Barnegat Leader Spring Sports Previews

Seniors and Sophs Dominate Barnegat Boys Lacrosse

Apr 19, 2019

Not too long ago, the Barnegat High School boys varsity lacrosse team looked like they were going places.

In 2014, they won their first 10 games of the season and then the following year won their first NJSIAA South Jersey Group 1 playoff game.

But then a drop-off in talent caught up with the Bengals, and last year they went 1-14. This season, they’ve gone 1-6 as of last weekend. The highlight of the season was a 12-0 win over Long Branch on April 8.

“We have strong leadership from a close-knit senior group that is looking to lead the way for our upcoming sophomore class,” said head coach Andrew Villiez. “We are constantly improving and the future looks promising for our program.”

Villiez took over as head coach last season, in a flip-flop move with Ryan Dalon.

“I was an assistant coach for him, and now he’s an assistant coach with me,” said Villiez, who was a member of the Bengals first lacrosse team and a member of the high school’s inaugural 2009 graduating class.

The core of seniors include long stick midfielder Dillon Balas; midfielders Mark Belvett, Tristan Porcelli and Brendan Malia; attackman Tim Lauterbach; and defensemen Sean Madej, Phil Gogarty, Hunter Wagner and Matthew Davies. The squad’s lone junior is midfielder Jacob Schleicher.

He has a family threesome with sophomore triplets Brian, James and Will Corliss. Their respective positions are goalie, midfield and defenseman.

Other sophomores include midfielders Anthony Bucca, Victor Brescia, John Gansereit, Jared Krey, Andrew Veneri and Jerry Weir, and attackman Tyler Quinn. Also looking for playing time is freshman Bryan Snowden.

The Bengals’ next home game is Wednesday, April 24, 10 a.m. against Donovan Catholic.  —E.E.
