All Barnegat Township police officers will be equipped with Narcan doses thanks to a $3,000 donation by the Barnegat Rotary Club. During a check presentation at the March 5 township committee meeting, club President Jason Henbest said up that point, just five officers were equipped with the dispensers used to reverse heroin overdoses

“But now every officer will have a dose on them,” said Henbest. “We thought this would be a good way to help the community and an opportunity to save lives.”

Henbest said nearly $1,900 came from a Rotary International community grant program. The balance was raised through various fundraisers.

“Our county has been hit particularly hard with the opioid crisis by having the second highest rate of overdose deaths in the state,” he said. “We hope that this helps our local law enforcement combat this major problem we have.”

Police Chief Keith Germain said the Narcan can also be used to protect officers.

“The risk of officers being accidentally exposed to potentially lethal doses of fentanyl is real and ever increasing,” he said. “Recently, an officer in Iowa was exposed and nearly died before being given several emergency doses of Narcan.” E.E.
