Surf City — It seems the Southern Regional football team has discovered how to score lots of points. On Sept. 27, the Rams needed a massive amount to overcome Brick Memorial.

Down by 11 points going into the fourth quarter, Southern scored 21 unanswered points during the final 12 minutes to come home with a 42-32 victory, improving to 3-1 on the season with several more winnable games coming up on the schedule during the first three weeks of October.

Southern scored touchdowns in each of the first three quarters against the Mustangs – a 3-yard run by Jaiden Brown in the first, followed by TD passes of 21 yards and 49 yards by quarterback Cole Robinson, the first one to Will DeVane and the second to Xavier Hendricks – but during the second and third quarters allowed Memorial all of its points and was down, 32-21, going into the fourth.

That’s when the Rams took over the game. Brown ran the ball in from 21 yards away to trip the lead to 32-27, before Robinson again found DeVane for a TD pass, this time from 24 yards, and a two-point conversion gave Southern the lead for good at 35-32. Brown ran through a defender and into the end zone from 2 yards out, and Hank Gallacher kicked his fourth PAT of the game, to cap the scoring.

Brown ended up carrying the ball 23 times for 133 yards, while Robinson completed 10 of 17 passes for 176 yards. Hendricks caught three passes for 80 yards and DeVane also snagged three passes for 49 yards. Defensively, Brown was in on five tackles and made an interception, while Steve Langton and Sebastian Cervetto also made five tackles.

During the next three weeks, the Rams will be at home against Marlboro (Oct. 4), Middletown North (Oct. 11) and Freehold Township (Oct. 19).

Pinelands Girls Soccer Team

Snags Sixth Straight Win

Since starting the season with a pair of losses to two of the better teams in the Shore Conference Class A South division, the Pinelands Regional girls soccer team not only has cruised through its B South opponents but on Sept. 28 culminated a six-game winning streak to end the month, beating Holmdel on the road, 3-2.

Following a 6-0 bruising of B South foe Barnegat, the Wildcats (6-2) visited the Hornets (2-8) and found themselves locked in a 1-1 tie at halftime. But junior forward Sunni DiElmo, who scored the team’s first-half goal, delivered twice more during the final 40 minutes for the hat trick. Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper Brenna DeVoe tallied nine saves to help preserve the victory.

Against the Bengals on Sept. 24, Amanda Sisco opened the scoring just a few minutes into the contest and the Wildcats cruised from there, adding five more goals, including three by DiElmo and one each from Bridget Dudas and Marlee Tharp. Aileen Cahill gave out three assists and Sisco contributed one. DeVoe made seven saves for the shutout.

At 4-0 in the division, Pinelands sits atop the B South standings with two divisional contests on the schedule – an Oct. 2 meeting with Lakewood and an Oct. 8 clash with Manchester. Victories in both will give the Wildcats a second straight division title. Last year, they won the first in program history.

Southern Volleyball Squad

Cruises to 15-2

Something strange happened last week. The Southern girls volleyball team played a three-game match for the first time this season. And, yes, the Rams won it, as they extended their winning streak to 10 matches following losses to North Hunterdon and Williamstown on Sept. 14.

Hosting their Southern Invitational on Sept. 28, the Rams scored a 25-14, 25-15 victory over Central Regional to win the tournament. Gianna Schiattarella dropped seven kills, while Rachael Pharo added six kills, and Stephanie Soares delivered 18 assists, seven digs and four aces to lead the way.

In the previous match, the Rams knocked off Donovan Catholic, 25-14, 25-16. While Pharo smashed nine kills and managed 10 digs, Emma Gildea added six kills and three blocks, and Soares gave out 20 assists. Riley Vaughn had a big match as well, scoring on five aces and two blocks. Schiattarella added five kills and eight digs.

The day before, Southern hammered Central, 25-15, 25-9, as Soares handed out 14 assists, Schiattarella banged down eight kills and Pharo ended with three digs and two aces. In the 25-15, 23-25, 25-15 win over Brick Memorial on Sept. 25, Pharo crushed 10 kills, registered nine digs and made three blocks, while Soares gave out 25 assists, delivered five aces and recorded seven digs, and Vaughn smashed four kills and four aces. Schiattarella also has nine kills and four digs, and Gildea whacked five kills.
