Right Thing to Do

Jun 26, 2019

To the Editor:

Thank you to Long Beach Township for doing a good thing preserving the wetlands between Beck Avenue and Rosemma Avenue in Holgate.

I give a lot of credit to Joe Mancini and crew for having the foresight and the heart to step forward at this time of increasing development and increasing wealth on LBI and do the uneconomic thing by saving this land. It’s the right thing to do. It’s also the soulful thing to do – which is rare in this world.

We forget sometimes that when you love a place, you don’t just use it for gain and for personal pleasure; you protect it. You respect it. You are responsible for it. For many of us, LBI is home. It has a heart that beats in us. We grew up here, we learned to swim in its bay, we learned how to cast a fishing pole here, how to ride a wave. We kissed a lifeguard here. We watched the sunset here. We breathed salty air, watched an egret fly, learned to put living things back. We raised our children here, too. We want what we love about this island to stay.

It’s hard to hope these days for the environment. It’s a fragile world, getting more fragile every day. But this gives me hope. Thank you to all who worked to make this happen.
