Register Soon for Dog Day Race 41 in Harvey Cedars

By David Biggy | Aug 07, 2019

Harvey Cedars — Last year, a familiar face captured the High Point Volunteer Co.’s annual Dog Day Race title. Despite a drizzly 70 degrees and 15 mph north wind, Harvey Cedars summer resident Jake Shoemaker completed the 5-mile course in 25:15.23, about 45 seconds ahead of Manahawkin’s Jarred Iacovelli.

This year’s race – scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 18 – will be the 41st edition of the Dog Day Road Race, slated for its standard 9:30 a.m. start right outside the doors of the fire company’s building on West 80th Street in Harvey Cedars. Proceeds benefit the fire company, and now’s a good time to register for your spot among the field, typically between 850 to 1,000 competitors.

With T-shirts guaranteed for the first 1,000 runners, online registration is open until Friday, Aug. 16, for $25 per runner. On Saturday, Aug. 17, competitors can register at the firehouse from 3 to 7 p.m. for $30 per runner. Race Day registration from 7 to 9 a.m., for $35 per individual, also is available.

As has been the case since 1999, CompuScore will handle the timing for the race. Cash prizes go to the top three male and female overall finishers, while additional prizes are doled out to the top three in 15 age groups: 10-and-under, 11-13, 14-16, 17-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70-and-over.

It’s a walker-friendly event as well. All participants should be prepared and appropriately dressed for hot, humid conditions. First aid and EMS crews will be on hand throughout the race, water stations will be set up along the course, and snacks and drinks will be available for competitors following the race.
