Reforms Needed

Jul 10, 2019

To the Editor:

I read with great interest, Mr. Imperiale’s Commentary on the Article V convention. I have been following the subject for almost 20 years and it was refreshing to see someone discuss it in plain terms. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain by conducting a nonbinding, deliberative assembly of state delegations focused on amendment language.

While we can talk about our pet amendments informally all day on Facebook, the convention call transforms the discussion into formal discussion. This is what we should be doing at this point. Are some people afraid to formally discuss amendments to the Constitution? I am not.

The political right wants a balanced budget amendment, and the left wants campaign finance reform. The former has never had enough popular support to be ratified. Campaign finance or other electoral reforms may have enough, and that is likely all we’ll get out of a convention – boring, old electoral reform.
