Long Beach Township — A public hearing will be held in Long Beach Township at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 1, to collect opinions on the municipality’s plans to create a seven-space parking lot on the marshy north end of Bayview Park, in Brant Beach. The parking area, if approved, would include three spots for people with disabilities, with a crushed oyster shell base.

Neighbors in the area were vocally opposed to the original application, which included many more parking spaces, but a number of residents are still displeased with the scaled-down proposal, as they do not want the parcel, at Block 15.22, disturbed at all.

“There is plenty of existing parking around Bayview Park,” said resident Carol Smith. “Our group of supporters to save this area of protected coast land have written numerous letters to the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection, which will be deciding whether or not to allow the destruction to proceed.”

Smith would like to see the land preserved for “the herons, egrets, ducks, rabbits, turtles and horseshoe crabs (that) have continued to make this either their home, or their breeding, feeding or resting place. It is one of the only surviving bayfront coastal habitats left along the Boulevard.”

The DEP was reviewing the township’s application this spring, after receiving the Coastal Area Facilities Review Act individual permit request from the municipality in March, as Public Information Officer Caryn Shinske confirmed at the time.

Written comments on the proposed change should be directed to Municipal Clerk Lynda Wells at 609-361-1000 or 6805 Long Beach Blvd., Brant Beach, N.J. 08008. A copy of any submitted comments should be sent to the NJDEP Green Acres Program, Bureau of Legal Services and Stewardship, P.O. Box 412, Trenton, N.J. 08635-0412.

A regular meeting of the LBT Board of Commissioners will be held at 4 p.m. July 1, prior to the hearing. Both meetings will take place in the courtroom of the municipal complex at 6805 Long Beach Blvd. in Brant Beach. —J.K.-H.
