Southern Ocean County — Last fall, Southern Ocean County scholastic sports teams had plenty of success and many still were playing well into November. This fall, varsity squads from Southern Regional, Pinelands Regional and Barnegat high schools may follow suit.

Of course, now the questions arise – Can the high-scoring duo of Aileen Cahill and Sunni DiElmo lead the Pinelands girls soccer team to another Shore Conference Class B South division title and possibly an NJSIAA sectional crown? With Kevin Kiernan and Aidan McInerney leading the offensive charge, is this the year the Southern boys soccer team wins the A South crown and makes a deep run in the Shore Conference Tournament? And what about the Barnegat field hockey team? Is this the year the Bengals win B South? Is the Southern field hockey team good enough to win the Shore Conference Tournament? Will Southern’s girls volleyball squad challenge for another NJSIAA Group IV championship? Can the Pinelands girls volleyball team win another SCT?

During the next 10 weeks, all these questions will be answered, and now that school is back in session, it all officially gets underway this week. So, in case you want to check out some of the action as the fall season begins – and hopefully Hurricane Dorian will stay far enough away and not make a major impact on the schedule – you have plenty of options.

Thursday, Sept. 5, is a big day for Pinelands, weather permitting, as the field hockey team starts off with a big divisional clash at home against Jackson Liberty at 3:45 p.m., while at the same time the girls soccer and girls tennis teams take on Toms River East and Manchester, respectively, on their home court and field. Also on the slate, the boys soccer team travels to Shore Regional for a 4 p.m. contest, and the girls volleyball crew heads to Point Pleasant Beach for a 5:15 p.m. match.

As for Southern, the Rams’ girls tennis program is home to meet Toms River East at 3:45 p.m., and the girls volleyball team is slated for a home match against Brick Memorial at 5:15 p.m. Both the girls soccer and field hockey teams are on the road to square off with Manchester and Toms River South, respectively.

At Barnegat High School, the boys soccer team will face Keyport at 4 p.m., and the gymnastics team starts its season against Middletown North, also at 4 p.m., in the auxiliary gym. The field hockey squad goes to Point Pleasant Borough, the girls volleyball team goes to Lakewood, the girls tennis team travels to Jackson Liberty, and the girls soccer crew will be up in Keyport as well.

Football season starts Friday, Sept. 5, weather permitting, for two of the three local teams, as Southern hosts Nottingham at 7 p.m. and Barnegat travels to Point Pleasant Borough for its opener, also at 7 p.m. Additionally, Southern’s field hockey squad has its home opener at 3:45 p.m. against Manchester, and Pinelands’ field hockey team has its second straight home contest, against Lakewood at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Barnegat’s girls soccer team is slated for a 10 a.m. home match against Long Branch.
