Southern Ocean County — It’s only appropriate that the bowling season started during Thanksgiving week, as it gave the locals some opportunities to roll a bunch of turkeys early in the week before feasting on some later in the week.

Interestingly, the Pinelands boys and girls squads got their season underway with victories on Nov. 25, while the Barnegat teams went up against the toughest team in the Shore Conference South B division and lost their openers at Ocean Lanes in Lakewood.

The Pinelands girls cruised to a 3-0 victory over Donovan Catholic behind solid efforts from their top bowlers, Kaitlyn Edwards and Caitlyn Rodriguez. Edwards kicked off the season by tossing games of 161, 152 and 175 for a 488 series, while Rodriguez, the team’s anchor, delivered consistency throughout with games of 150, 153 and 151 for a 454 series.

At the front of the lineup, Catherine Allen scored a 150 to start the season and ended up with a 403 series, while Courtney Burns topped out at 138 in the second game and finished with a 396 series, and Kennedy Heinrichs registered a high game of 132 on the way to a 359 series.

Meanwhile, the Pinelands boys also came up with a 3-0 win over Donovan Catholic, as Dylan McGowan led the way with games of 148, 182 and 180 en route to a 510 series. Ryan McGowan fired a 430 series behind a top score of 160 in the third game, while Ethan Edwards managed high games of 142 and 141 for a 413 series, and Jacob Dippolite threw a 148 in the first game to help out.

Unfortunately, the Bengals had their hands full with Manchester, the defending division champions, on both the boys’ and girls’ alleys and ended up losing 3-0 contests. The girls lost, 926-775, 811-705 and 870-664, while the boys dropped match results of 978-881, 969-847 and 1,055-914.

For the Barnegat girls, Lily Spagnola led the way with an outstanding 585 series. The senior anchor delivered scores of 202, 203 and 179 for a 194.7 average through three games, taking the early lead in the division’s high-average race. Classmate Jasmine Reid topped out at 160 and 152 during the first two games and ended with a 432 series. Camryn White rolled a 155 in the first game and finished with a 397, and Madison Kubicz tossed high games of 138 and 137 on the way to a 384 series.

On the boys’ side of the lanes, the Bengals were led by Joe Spagnola with games of 179, 214 and 235 for a 628 series, while Matt Xiques tallied games of 160, 152 and 232 for a 544 series, and Anthony Balas scored 217 and 170 during the first two games and finished with a 508 series. Matt Charland was consistent throughout with games of 158, 161 and 172 for a 491 series, and Mike Pulig contributed games of 167, 150 and 154 for a 471 series.

The Southern boys and girls opened their seasons against Toms River East on Nov. 26.
