Long Beach Township — The St. Francis of Assisi and St. Mary’s of Barnegat parishes are looking for volunteers to participate in “Beach Sweep LBI” on Saturday, April 27, at 9 a.m. The rain date is Saturday, May 11. Event coordinator Michael Bruno said participants will meet at the St. Francis Community Center in Brant Beach at 9 a.m. Target areas for the cleanup are Ninth Street in Surf City and 67th Street in the Brant Beach section of Long Beach Township.

“We picked those spots because they are near municipal buildings which would have bathroom facilities available,” said Bruno.

He said volunteers should bring their buckets and gloves.

“Public works departments said they would help us out with trash bags The cleanup will probably run to about 1 in the afternoon. This is our first year of doing this, so we’re hoping to get around 250 people.”

Bruno said the event would be similar to the recent beach sweep coordinated by Clean Ocean Action.

“These were areas not included in that beach sweep,” he said. “Plus, it doesn’t hurt to have more than one of these events as it is so important to have a clean beach.”

Richard Huegi, one of the organizers, added, “This is a good way to bring the community together, to have people participate in a very important cause.”
