Stafford Township — The 66 students in this year’s graduating class at the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) in Stafford Township accepted $6,252,000 in scholarships out of $21,888,000 offered, according to Jean Sullivan, communications director for the Ocean County Vocational Technical School.

Sullivan said the scholarship amounts reflect the hard work and dedication of the student body.

She explained the reason students did not accept the full amount of scholarship money awarded. “Students sometimes are awarded scholarships they have to turn down. For instance, a student may receive a scholarship offer from a school they will not attend.”

MATES held its Class of 2019 Awards Night on Tuesday, June 11.

Some scholarships are one-time awards, others may be for a given amount spread out over the expected four years of a college course of study.

“The totals are according to the granting organization,” Sullivan said. “It could be for an initial amount or it could be distributed over four years, according to the scholarship specifications.”

She acknowledged two county organizations for their philanthropy.

“The Ocean County Personnel and Guidance Association has been very generous with scholarships awarded this year. And the Ocean County Foundation for Vocational Technical Education has done a lot of fundraising to offer scholarships, as well,” she said.

The 66 graduates are scheduled to attend 35 colleges, ranging from local favorites Stockton University and Rutgers University to campuses farther afield, such as New York University in Abu Dhabi.
