Southern Ocean County — With more than 340 competitors comprising the field, the annual Gobble Wobble 5K in Stafford Township on Thanksgiving morning was a windy one. But Nick Nocco didn’t seem to have trouble breaking through the stiff wind and instead breezed to the finish line in first place.

Nocco cruised to victory in 16 minutes, 46.7 seconds, well beyond two minutes faster than the first two females to cross the line and nearly three minutes in front of the next male finisher. Nocco’s 5:24 pace was no match for the rest of the field, with only 13 competitors trekking through the course near the Stafford municipal complex in under seven minutes.

Jessica Abbott led the female division, taking second overall in 19:03.3, while Jillian Smith wasn’t far behind, in 19:08.0. In fourth overall was William Wright with a time of 19:22.6, while James Rivers took the fifth spot in 19:36.2. Kristopher Neff was sixth in 19:37.2, while Jack Matthews finished seventh in 19:52.3, Jeff Roma placed eighth in 20:02.8, Nunzio D’Amelio swiped the ninth spot in 20:12.2, and 10th place went to Keith O’Neill with a time of 20:32.1

Completing the top five in the female division were Isabella Wyckoff in 22:06.3, Brittany Wissel in 22:33.6 and Heather Sosnosky in 22:59.2.

Two days later in Beach Haven, 124 competitors took to the streets surrounding Veterans Memorial Park to take part in the Hunger Foundation of Southern Ocean’s Thanks 4 Giving “Runraiser” 5K.

For a third straight year, Nick Trombley cruised to a first-place finish, crossing the line in 19:02.43, well in front of second-place finisher Jeremy Battles, who finished in 19:35.46. Eileen Laverty easily raced to the first spot in the female division for a second straight year, completing the 3.1-mile course in 20:46.18 to place third overall.

Kevin Murray grabbed the fourth position in 21:22.96, while Anthony Zucconi took fifth with a time of 21:24.38, Richard Kanak was sixth in 21:36.62, Rich Neff swiped seventh in 22:28.83, Chris Sullivan was eighth in 21:56.10, Pat Pietrefesa ended up ninth in 23:02.25, and Paul Sullivan snagged 10th in 23:39.89.

Katie Doyle (24:14.15), Madison Schenker (24:37.92), Jen Sullivan (25:14.20) and Natalie Aftanis (25:22.38) were the second through fifth female finishers behind Laverty.
