Ocean County to Replace Pontoon Boat

Ocean County — Ocean County is beginning the process of replacing its pontoon boat, the Bay Cruiser, according to Christopher Claus, chief park naturalist for Ocean County Parks.

“The Coast Guard inspected the boat and said that because of the pontoons’ thickness, they are no longer viable,” Claus said.

The boat had been used primarily for public educational and recreational tours out of Cattus Island County Park in Toms River but had also been used by students and faculty at the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Sciences (MATES) in Stafford Township in support of their Marine Debris Recovery Project, as well as other projects at the school administered by the Ocean County Vocational Technical Schools.

John Wnek, supervisor at MATES, said they have used the pontoon boat since 2005.

Claus said the parks department is working on putting their purchase out for bid and plans to have the process complete by next year.

“We are working with a company in Florida,” he said. “We are looking for something similar to what the Seaport has.”
