Barnegat Township is now home to a “Next Generation” Dunkin’ Donuts, which opened May 23 at the Barnegat 67 development on Lighthouse Drive.

“This was the first Next Generation Dunkin’ Donuts franchise that was built from the ground up,” said Ray Hall, store manager. “All the others were remodeled.”

He said the Barnegat site is one of 26 owned by Hall’s management team, stretching from Orange County in New York to South Jersey. These include other local establishments in Waretown, Manahawkin, Tuckerton and Ship Bottom.

He said the new-concept store features a modern atmosphere and new and innovative technologies and design elements, including the first two-lane drive-thru with one lane exclusively for mobile ordering, and a new tap system serving consistently cold beverages such as coffees, iced teas, cold brew coffee and nitro infused cold brew coffee.

“Instead of getting them served at room temperature, they will be served at 34 degrees, meaning they will stay cooler a lot longer after you take them outside,” he said.

Unlike the old-style franchises, the eatery moved its baked goods up front: A bowed glass display case takes doughnuts from their usual placement behind the staff and puts them where guests can see while they wait in line.

When Dunkin’ Donuts, recently renamed Dunkin’,  announced the Next Generation Concept last year, Dave Hoffman, president of Dunkin Donuts U.S. and Canada, wrote in a press release, “The launch of our next generation concept store marks one of the most important moments in Dunkin’ Donuts’ growth as an on-the-go, beverage-led brand.  We have worked closely with our franchisee communities to create a positive, energetic atmosphere for our guests that remains true to our heritage, while emphasizing and enhancing the unparalleled convenience, digital innovation and restaurant excellence that distinguishes Dunkin’. We are thrilled to begin the New Year with such an exciting milestone for our brand, and look forward to rolling out Dunkin’ Donuts’ stores of the future to our guests in all of our communities.”

Township Committeeman Albert Bille stopped by on the first day, and remarked, “They have a lot of room, and it’s nicely laid out. They looked at different locations before finally agreeing on this spot. I think Barnegat really hit a home run here.”

Hours are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, with the drive-through open until 10 p.m.
