A Newark man faces multiple criminal charges and motor vehicle violations following a police chase in Ship Bottom shortly before noon Sunday, June 9, according to borough law enforcement officials.

Savio G. Garcia, 18, was arrested and charged after eluding Ship Bottom police, who had been notified he was driving a vehicle reported stolen out of West Orange, borough police said. Garcia failed to stop when Ship Bottom Patrolman Brian Tretola signaled he was pulling him over, according to police.

Garcia’s attempt to outrun police resulted in the vehicle he was driving striking another vehicle while both were traveling on Long Beach Boulevard, law enforcement officials said. He continued driving, leaving the scene of the accident before finally abandoning the vehicle behind an East Seventh Street residence.

Police said Garcia fled on foot before being captured, with the help of Long Beach Township police. Garcia was transported and lodged in the Ocean County Jail.  —G.G.S.
