Stafford Township — Boy and girl basketball players of Stafford Township may be happy to know they can have some fun playing hoops in a casual environment at Ocean Acres Park this summer, as the Stafford Recreation Department rolls out a new program slated to begin July 2.

“We’re excited to start this new program,” said Recreation Director Betti Anne McVey. “It’s going to be overseen by Stafford Recreation Basketball and it’s going to be for about six weeks. It’s just another fun thing for kids to do on a Tuesday night, to keep them active and happy.”

The 3-on-3 Summer Hoops program will be held each Tuesday from July 2 through Aug. 6 on the lighted courts behind the Ocean Acres Elementary School. Play generally will begin at 6 p.m. and run until about 9 p.m. The program is for boys and girls in grades 3 through 12, and it’s going to encompass a more pick-up style of basketball as opposed to an organized league. Bleachers will be available for parents and fans to watch and a DJ also will be on hand to provide a musical background.

The cost per player is $30, but registration is only open until Sunday, June 30, and space is limited. Registration can be done online at staffordrecbasketball.com, or by stopping by the Bay Avenue Community Center in Manahawkin during daytime hours until June 28.  —D.B.
