Stafford Township, NJ — For some who don’t often travel Stafford Avenue in Manahawkin’s downtown region, it’s easy to pass right by the New Jersey Natural Gas satellite station and not even realize it’s there. After all, the road is best known as the homes to Pine Shores Art Association, Larry’s Barber Shop and the Stafford Township Volunteer Fire Co.

But soon, NJNG employees based at 86 Stafford Ave. will have a new home base, a bit more prominently located on Route 9 about a mile and a half away.

“For many years, we have operated a satellite office to house administrative staff, perform light vehicle maintenance and stage crews to serve the greater Manahawkin area,” said corporate communications representative Kevin Roberts. “That location was a converted postal facility, and we have had long-term plans to eventually move to a more modern facility.”

The satellite building, which typically houses some two dozen NJNG employees and has a vehicle yard for smaller crew trucks, will be moving its operation to the corner of Route 9 and Silo Road. The wooded land at the location was cleared in December, and the new building’s construction began in March. No plans are in the works to expand any of the operation currently in place on Stafford Avenue, Roberts said.

“It’s more about migration than expansion,” he said. “It varies from day to day, depending on the service needs in the area at the time, but we don’t have a lot of people in that building. We’re talking administrative staff, dispatch people and a few service crews. They might be able to change some spark plugs or something of that nature, but none of the real maintenance to our trucks will take place there.”

With construction slated for completion by late September, the move to the new location is slated for soon afterward, Roberts said. The site, which will be used only by NJNG employees – the general public has no need to go there, since customer or bill payment services will not be available – will be accessible from both Route 9 and Silo Road.
