Myriad Summer Activities in Harvey Cedars

Harvey Cedars — Concerts, arts and crafts, local history, yoga on the beach and sports are part of the summer schedule of events happening in Harvey Cedars, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary. The events, announced by the borough activities committee, take place in Sunset Park unless otherwise noted.

The High Point Firehouse will be the scene of free movie nights at 7  on the second and fourth Tuesdays of July and August. Popcorn and soda will be available; donations to the fire company are appreciated.

You’ll get a mix of classic/alternative rock, reggae, blues and more during the Wednesday evening concerts, which begin at 7. The opener is Verdict on July 10. The rest of the lineup is Facedown, July 17; Jimmy Brogan Band, July 24; Slow Hands, July 31; Asbury Fever, Aug. 7; and Jenny Barnes and the Great Unknown, Aug. 14.

Want to start off your morning in a state of relaxation? Through Monday, Sept. 2, Ashley Quinn of Liquid Bliss Yoga will conduct daily yoga sessions beginning at 8 a.m. at the 80th Street beach. If you need to de-stress yourself later in the day, more daily yoga sessions are planned at 6:30 at Sunset Park.

Craft Day By the Bay is scheduled for Saturday, July 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 80 crafters will be on hand.

An old house tour is planned Wednesday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and limited to 200. Reservations can be made at borough hall.

Young athletes are welcome to sign up for a soccer camp running from Monday to Friday, July 8 to July 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is coordinated by the Martyn Rushmore School of Soccer. Additional soccer camps are planned July 15 to July 19, July 22 to July 26, July 29 to Aug. 2 and Aug. 19 to Aug. 23.

Lacrosse camps are scheduled Monday to Thursday, Aug. 5 to Aug. 8, and Aug. 12 to Aug. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are run by Brothers NJ All Star Lacrosse Camp.

Local author Margaret Buchholz presents the Harvey Cedars Picture Show on Thursday, July 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the firehouse. She will conduct a slide show featuring old photos and also invites any resident to submit photos by emailing her at Light refreshments will be served.

Tuesday, July 30, is Kids Night at the Park, from 6 to 8. Activities include horse carriage rides, petting zoo and games for all ages. Fire trucks and first aid and police vehicles will also be on hand. Proceeds benefit the Harvey Cedars Lifeguard in Training Program.

Children can learn the finer points of angling Saturday, Aug. 10, when the LBI Fishing Club, police department and other sponsors present “Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs.” The fishing tournament for children ages 5 to 17 features instructional booths, surf casting tips, bait, lunch and door prizes. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Sunset Park, and the fishing begins at 9 a.m. at the Hudson Street beach. For details, call Doug Brown at 609-352-0481 or email

Also on that day is a 125th anniversary boat parade, beginning at 4 p.m. Viewing spots are Sunset Park and the 75th Street bay beach. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated boats. Register by emailing

“Barnegat Light, the Epic 400 Year Story” will be presented Thursday, Aug. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the firehouse. Author Reilly Patten Sharp will discuss her book Barnegat Light, a new volume discussing the town and its famous lighthouse. The talk includes some of the history and lore of Harvey Cedars, Wood’s Island and the LBI Railroad.

Dog Day Race weekend kicks off with two events on Saturday, Aug. 17. The Blue Claw Craft Show runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also at 10 a.m. is registration for the blue claw crab race, run by PBA Local 175. You can bring your own “competitor” or rent one. The action begins at 11.

The Dog Day Race takes place Sunday, Aug. 18. The 5-mile race starts at 9:30 a.m., and the course begins and ends at the High Point Firehouse. Registration gets underway at 7:30.

Catboat races are scheduled on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 1 p.m. The event begins with a skippers meeting at 12:30 p.m.
