Beach Haven — July 4 may not be the only opportunity to see a fireworks show in Beach Haven.

Fantasy Island Amusement Park is proposing five other dates for the pyrotechnic displays, which would be shot off Taylor Avenue – the same site as the July 4 fireworks. The dates are all Saturdays: June 7, July 20, Aug. 10,  Sept. 1 and Oct. 12.

The borough council tabled a resolution to approve Fantasy Island’s requests at its May 13 meeting and will revisit the issue at its next agenda meeting on Thursday, May 30, 4 p.m.

Brian Wainwright, Fantasy Island chief executive officer, said that last year, the park sponsored a fireworks show during the LBI Kite Festival and was looking to hold shows on weekends featuring special events. The vendor is Serpico Pyrotechnics in Toms River.

“Having more shows can draw more people and help extend our season,” said Wainwright. “We know that fireworks is a great attraction.”

But the council brought up environmental concerns with Councilman Charles Maschal saying a study should be done on the shows’ effects on migratory birds.

During public comments, resident Michael Peler said the borough should just stick with the July 4 show.

“Five shows is too much,” he said. “We don’t need all these explosions. It could have a lot of impact, not just on making dogs bark all over the place but veterans with PTSD who might be staying here.”

Former Councilman Don Kakstis suggested the amusement park look into laser light shows, which he said would be quieter and less harmful to the environment.  —E.E.
