March 9 Science Saturday Investigates Pine Wilt Disease

Mar 06, 2019

Richard Buckley from the Plant Diagnostic Laboratory of Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, and a member of the LBI Garden Club, will discuss pine wilt disease at the March 9 Science Saturday. The presentation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the main building of the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies.

Pine wilt is initiated by a nematode vectored to trees by a wood borer insect called the pine sawyer beetle and, as LBIF Membership and Community Coordinator Jillian Schratz explained, “is just one of the diseases causing significant problems with our plants and trees.”

“This session will help people understand these various diseases and how to take corrective action,” said Schratz.

Admission to Science Saturdays, organized by the LBIF Science Committee, is free for Foundation members. A $5 donation per person is requested from all other attendees.
