Long Beach Township Land Use Board Denies Lorry’s Island End Motel Application

Long Beach Township — Lorry’s Island End Motel, at 23 West Washington Ave. in Holgate, has been denied its request to place three trailers adjacent to the motel to house employees. The Long Beach Township Land Use Board, at its meeting last week, “turned them down,” Board Attorney Al Sicheri said Monday.

The application, which was held over from the July 10 meeting, requested “minor site plan and special reasons variance approval so as to permit three trailers to be placed adjacent to the motel.”

While the board aims to support local businesses and is not necessarily opposed to employee housing, trailers are not a permitted use in the R50 (residential) zone. The motel itself is a “pre-existing non-conforming use,” Sicheri pointed out.

By definition, he said, allowing the trailers would be allowing a trailer park.

The board is also concerned, in general, about mobile homes on a barrier island, as they can become dislodged and dangerous in severe storms. Sicheri mentioned the former LBI Trailer Park, which was wiped out by Superstorm Sandy.

An addition to the building, said Sicheri, is an example of something that would be permitted.
