Life Jacket Safety Program Coming to Barnegat

Apr 10, 2019

As the weather gets warmer and warmer, public docks and boat ramps will get busier and busier.

But right before the summer season starts, U.S. Coast Guard auxiliary flotillas can often be seen at these areas educating people about boating safety, sometimes offering free vessel inspections.

At the Barnegat Township dock, the flotilla from Barnegat Light will be teaching people about the importance of wearing life jackets. Carlos Gomez, flotilla commander, received permission to conduct the clinic by the township committee at its meeting last week.

Gomez said the concrete walkways by the dock and boat ramp will have stencils, featuring the image of a “yield” sign. Inside the sign, black lettering will read “Life Jacket Zone.”

“When you get close to the water, whether you’re fishing or getting ready to go out on a boat, you need to have that life jacket on,” he said.

Gomez said he has not set a date yet, but it will likely be on a Saturday.

“The Coast Guard flotillas do a great job in educating the public,” said Mayor Alfonso Cirulli. “You can never put too much importance on safety. We want people to enjoy a safe summer using our waterfront facilities.”  —E.E.
