Long Beach Township — Avoid the hassle of driving this Memorial Day weekend and hop on the LBI Shuttle, which returns to the Island roadways this Friday, May 24. And, new this year, one of the service’s buses will run a constant loop from the parking lot by the Manahawkin DMV to two locations on LBI, for the same price as a ride on the Island.

Fees are $2 per ride until 7 p.m. and $5 per ride after 7 p.m. (Exact fare is required.) A season pass is also available for $125. Children ages 12 and under ride for free, accompanied by an adult.

The shuttle schedule for the upcoming holiday weekend is as follows: 3 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Friday, May 24; 7 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 25; 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on both Sunday, May 26, and Monday, May 27.

Subsequently, through June 23, the shuttle will run Fridays 3 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Saturdays 7 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. and Sundays 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

The summer schedule starts June 24, with service seven days a week: 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Hours are the same for the Manahawkin shuttle except that the last bus leaves the DMV parking lot, on East Bay Avenue, at 11:30 p.m. each day. The two Island dropoff points are the 39th Street cutout in Brant Beach, and at How You Brewin’ in Surf City.

The shuttles – which are are ADA-accessible and air-conditioned – can be flagged down anywhere as they travel the length of the entire Island, from Holgate in the south to Barnegat Light on the northern end of LBI. A shuttle app, available from the App Store and Google Play, lets users track the locations of the buses.

There are also a few new designated regular stops in each municipality this summer, including Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars; 10th Street and the Boulevard in Surf City; and Fifth, 13th, 19th and 25th streets where they intersect with the Boulevard, both north and south, in Ship Bottom. In Beach Haven, passengers can be picked up, on the west side, at: the northwest corner of 12th, Ninth, Eighth, Second and Centre streets along Bay Avenue. On the east side, stops will be on the southeast corner of: Ninth Street, Eighth Street, Second Street and Engleside Avenue along Bay Avenue. Mid-block stops will be between Fourth and Fifth streets and between 10th and 11th streets.

The towns have increased their contributions to the shuttle service this year, “with the understanding and expectation that the Transportation System is to move toward self-sufficient operation without future municipal contributions in the near future,” as stated in a resolution from Ship Bottom Borough, which doubled its contribution, from $10,000 to $20,000, citing how important a part of the Island community the LBI Shuttle has become to locals, businesses and visitors.
